I just purchased this book. As an Instructional Designer, I’ve been developing course content and Power Points but did not have the skill to develop the content in an eLearning tool. The step-by-step instructions in this manual are incredible! Not only are the directions very easy to follow and explicit, by building the steps, you retain where functions and menus are located. By the second or third chapter, I retained many of the navigational aspects by continually applying and practicing.
Also, you are first taught how to do a particular function guided and then are given the opportunity to practice via an exercise Unguided with page references for the “how to” in case you forget how to do the step.
Not only am I learning this tool quickly and efficiently but it is refreshing to see that the book is written following sound instructional methodology. Nice book. It works great for those self teaching on Captivate, but you need a zip program to unzip files to work through the practices. The book directs readers to a website to download the practice files, but doesn’t tell you how to get a zip program or provide a free one at the website or anyone else.
It’s not always good to download files off the internet and I’m sure if the website was secure or not. It would have been better if the author just included a CD with the book with the files on it. I was required to get this book for an ISD masters program that I am attending.
The book does exactly what it says it does. I have been following the tutorials for about 3 months now and I now have a pretty decent working knowledge of Captivate. I am using Captivate 9 and even though this book was written for Captivate 8, I have not noticed any major changes in 9 that would cause you to not be able to follow along. Hope this helps.
A thorough introduction to Adobe Captivate 8, this book is a series of tutorials that walk you through Captivate 8’s basics. It’s full of great tips and instructionally sound. Based on the way the book is written and presented, the author is obviously an experienced instructional designer. Kevin Siegel’s guide is just right: each lesson is so well planned and linked to other lessons that I experienced just the right amount of “hand holding” and exposure to more advanced features of the application.
I gained much confidence. Since then, I have used subsequent editions to keep up to date with each new version of Captivate. As Captivate has become more robust in features, I think it made sense to break the latest edition into two volumes. I especially like the exercises that allow learners to actually interact with the software while learning how to carry out different processes.
I highly recommend it for those who want to learn on their own and at their own pace. The accompanying downloadable examples used in conjunction I’m a Captivate nube so this was a great introduction. The accompanying downloadable examples used in conjunction were a great help.
In some instances I felt the instructions could have been a bit more explicit as I lost track of where I was supposed to be.. I liked the authors input of opinions about what works and what does not and I’m finding I’m agreeing with him I’ve already bought ‘Beyond the Essential’s.

Installation instructions. The Adobe Application Manager appears. Click Update to install the patch. I just installed the mac version of Captivate 8 and did the Captivate Ver 8. I too am getting this on about 5 computers. Did you ever find a fix for this error? The worst part is the scroll bar is invisible!
Also the preview pane in the editor which is hardly necessary does not go away or minimize when I uncheck the preview option. The Audio Editor in Captivate3 was the best of all versions I have had every version since v1.
PS — it would also be amazing to be able to publish an. And thank you thank you so much for bringing back the grab and size screen on the screen record option! All in all i would never use any other authorware in place of this! Just a quick suggestion for future upgrades. With the responsive design, Tablet and PC view, it would be great if you could lock or copy the blue box that indicates the background area location to the next slide.
If you want to show the same part of the slide used over mulitple slides, you have to try and move the blue box to the exact position slide after slide which is very difficult. Our workaround has been to copy and paste the first slide, but that also then means cutting and pasting the text that was automatically generated to the copied slide and then deleting the original one etc.
Presently using Cap 8 version 8. Am I missing something? Do the options toggle on or off? I was doing a tutorial and in that video these options where available. Hi Mike, It seems like you are seeing the preview options inside a Responsive project.
Let me know if that works for you. Jaisingh Works like a charm. I knew the answer was right in front of me. But this answer raises another question, why did programmers do that, since a responsive project could still have an end use of being displayed in a browser?
Without the option there, I can only preview in my default browser not in multiple browsers, which would allow developers to catch problems early in development. Our organization has purchased Captivate 8 and it has been installed, but when I attempt to update the free update, the Updates button is grayed out. Please advise. Please check with your IT administrator. No, I have admin rights to the computer and I even had my IT admin attempt the update, but experiences the same behavior.
According to a few more recent entries to this subject above, it looks as if there is still an issue with other users. Hopefully I can get an answer here, if not I will go to Adobe support and post the solution for this feed. Did you ever get an answer as to why the Updates link is greyed out. We are encountering the same issue. Hi Ruth, the Updates link is greyed out if you have installed it via enterprise account.
You can either check with your Admin to get the updates or download and install it directly from the web. Appreciate for yoru assistance on how to make it available. Thank you in advance. Please update to version 8.
Please follow the steps mentioned in this blog post to install updates. Will this upgrade enhance publishing to HTML5 for devices or will make other bugs , can someone advise how stable is it or just stay on the current. Hopefully a new file might work ok for you, this took me months to put together, I have questions in my project, I do not want to redo it.
Hope you have better luck than me. I have just updated from Mavericks to Yosemite and have a major issue since the upgrade. Really, really not happy. Please fix this!!! I have sent you my files and I have tried a brand new captivate responsive project and published it to PhoneGap and the submit button and the image does not appear — what the heck is going on??

So my responsive project is not really responsive now either. This is what my original file now looks like — can you please include this in with your issue as well? After updating to 8. This happens in IE I am pretty sure we have not had this message before. Any input on what causes this would be appreciated. Can you share your project with us for investigation purpose. I may be a nit picker but it really peeves me that there is a milimeter jolt every time a slide changes because I have to attempt to manually align them versus using an absolute positioning system.
What happened to Adobe Captivate Exchange? There were some awesome templates and things we could download. Please help! Thank you for this. I can now stop using Cap 7 and move up to Cap 8 now.
Native app publisher is still being neglected. There is confusion between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8; it is using the wrong version of PhoneGap 3. The rest looks brilliant so far. Captivate can publish Windows 8 app but it does not support Windows Phone 8 apps. Thanks for your feedback, we will update the help docs accordingly. With our limited scope of testing, we have seen that most of the things work properly in this case. Thanks for the path to the templates.
Interestingly, I have a commercial Windows Phone 8 app, packaged in this way, that worked until the recent OS update. What version is this an update for?
