Site Maintenance

Currently I develop all of my courses as responsive courses in 9, however I wondered how the migration of courses would work? I assume I would need to reconstruct courses in a new responsive structure on either fluid box or breakpoint when I want to edit existing courses? The most critical component when upgrading is the theme.

Most developers training and books as well ignore the functionality of themes. A Fluid Boxes theme is totally different from a Breakpoints Theme search for my blogs about Object Style manager, and Fluid boxes on master slides.

Within the theme, the quizzing master slides may be the most sensitive. That make it a lot easier to recreate a quiz in a later version, where you need to use another theme. Do you have GIFT files for quizzes? If not, you can create them as preparation. Once a theme is updated, and you see issues with the upgraded file, start by deleting and recreating the quiz slides all types, including pretest and KC slides if you have them.

As for the choice of workflow, difficult to tell. Were the courses satisfactory when published n CP9? Keep to Breakpoints in that case. Just a warning: you did read about the limitations of Fluid Boxes in that post. Do you have a lot of groups, items timed for the rest of the project, items on the main master slide? If yes, stay with Breakpoints as well. Just FYI: although I was a beta tester, it took me about 3 months to get my head around the Fluid Boxes workflow when it was released with C It has become bit easier in CP, but still… do not expect to be up and running right away.

I will read your articles on object style and already read your fluid boxes on master slides I will re-read though. I have mixed feedback on previous courses, however as they were built by other developers, I have a clean slate to start with the best approach I think will be right for me and the organisation.

Yeah previous developers at the organisation relied heavily on groups and items on master slider not aware of any rest of project setups though and after reading your article, breakpoints makes sense for existing projects. Thinking about a split approach for existing and new projects maybe breakpoints and fluid box … but more research is needed before I will move forward with this approach potentially.

I have read about the learning curve in one of your articles and have been trying to work on knowledge prior to upgrading however definitely expect a delay in getting up and running. Personally I never skipped an upgrade. You can continue to use Breakpoints, which is the responsive workflow you had in CP9. It is not compulsory to switch to Fluid Boxes, which is a totally different workflow, and where you would have to restart from scratch.

I will post a link in a separate answer, where I compare the Breakpoint views with Fluid Boxes, maybe it could clarify the difference? Unfortunately the organisation I have recently joined had Captivate 9 and skipped an upgrade, anyway getting that sorted now. Yeah I read your articles on breakpoints and fluid box and found them very informative before posting especially a useful article on fluid box and quiz slides.

I am still undecided on the best workflow for us and will continue to research which is right one for us and our learners. Apart from responsive workflows, is there any other functionality that could be impacted by the transfer? You must be logged in to post a comment. Show All Notifications.
