The OS is Windows 7 bit. I was skeptical when the customer told me that a friend had uninstalled several things, but a check of MSCONFIG showed that what he had done was to turn all of the startup and services items that could be turned off. Safe mode brought the CPU out of saturation.

After running for a while the computer seems to lock up for several minutes, after which there is a slow response for a few seconds and then it locks up again. I have scanned with Malwarebytes and found nothing. I uninstalled Norton , which seemed to help for a while. I found this problem with XP, and was never able to solve it. I removed as many programs as I could, but the problem always came back. I finally reinstalled XP after saving files I needed.

XP works fine now, though it took forever for it to update. As you probably know, SVCHost. And, of course, it may be something else. The first step is to identify what SVCHost.

The fundamental issue is that Windows Update got an update to itself with a bug in it. Unbelievably, it apparently will sometimes eventually finish, but then so will the universe. So you either have to believe they are dumb enought to screw up in exactly the same way again, or they are arrogant enough to deliberately pull the same dishonest underhand stunt again. Given their track record, I believe both cases. Microsoft screwed up so many updates in Windows 98 that I stopped installing them entirely.

The link I posted blames Windows Update itself for the issue. So the trick would be to select ONLY fixes to that utility in your first session, download it, install it, reboot from cold, and then all updates older and newer than that one should be up to normal speed next time.
