Ask a new question. I have download the Media Creation Tool on another computer and can use the USB stick to get to the Choose an Option screen. I have tried all of the Advanced Options System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair, Command Prompt, and Go Back to the Previous Version. If I try a System Restore, I get the message “To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore.

Restart the computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore”. Restarting computer hangs at the rotation circle. If I try a System Image Backup, I get the message “Windows cannot find a system image on this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final DVD from a backup set and click Retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options”. Closing the dialog gives me an option to “Select a system image”.

If I try Startup Repair, I get a screen that tells me it is diagnosing my computer. After a minute or so, the computer restarts and I get start up screen with the rotating dots. This is where it hangs. I had assumed this is the USB drive with the MCT on it, but if I remove the USB stick, I still get the same thing. If I try “Go Back to the Previous Version”, I get the message that a previous build could not be found. I have tried the “Reset this PC”, using the option of “Keep my files”.

I get the message the option to keep my files will not work. I would prefer not to have to reinstall everything. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but the MS Community wouldn’t let me back in! After clicking on the Primary partition to install Windows, I get the message “We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one.

For more information, see the Setup log files. Could it be there is not enough free space on Partition 3? If so, I could get into Safe Mode and backup and remove some stuff. We need to do further investigation on your concern so that we can identify the cause of the issue:. The reason we ask is that, there are known random cases that when you use the System Restore via repair disk or using the media installer, the installed operating system could not be found.

The system is an Alienware Aurora R3. The system is about 6 years old and uses the legacy BIOS. I removed the MCT USB stick in order to let the system boot on its own. I get the boot screen with options F2 Setup and F12 Boot Options.

If I let the system boot without invoking F2 or F12, I get the “Please Wait” screen with the rotating dots and then the “Choose an Option” screen. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem, I have listed the results from trying to use the Advanced Options in my first message. It seems to me as if any option that results in an attempt to restart hangs the system.

If I shut the system off using the physical off button on the top of the tower, it does not hang. If I use the MCT USB stick to boot, I get the results as listed above in my reply message to Andre. Thank you for the feedback, Bob. Based on the information that you have provided, you have accessed the Advanced Startup Options menu using MCT.

If it does not work, try performing a Repair Upgrade to check if it works. You can refer to Andre Da Costa’s Forum Article on how to perform a repair upgrade. This is if you are still able to boot to Windows. If you read my previous response, you will see my results if I do not boot using the MCT USB stick. Using the MCT on a USB stick, I can get to the option of installing W10 but I get the message that it can’t create or locate an existing one.

It appears as if I can delete the Partition 3 on Drive 4, but it would seem that would remove all W10 files, which might make a new installation of W10 not possible. The only way I can get into Safe Mode on the R3 is by substituting an SDD I was trying to get to boot from a PCI slot last year.

I did a copy of the then W7 HDD and tried to use the SSD as the boot drive when it was installed in an open PCI slot didn’t work but the drive still had the copy of W7 on it. This I can use to boot into W7 Safe Mode if I substitute it for the W10 HDD. I have resisted using this backup to restore the W10 HDD because I am unsure if it will work. Also, I tried to backup the W7 drive from within Safe Mode, but it doesn’t seem as if backup software works from within Safe Mode.

You suggest I do a backup while in Safe Mode, but how would you go about that? Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. I have been trying since then to get it back up and running.

Vanessa Yar Microsoft Agent. In reply to Kubotaham’s post on October 5, Hi Bob, Noting the troubleshooting steps you’ve performed on this thread, you may actually follow your own suggestions that you posted last September Just make sure to go into Safe Mode and make a backup before deleting anything.

You may actually delete all partitions that you’ve specified to maximize your drive and do a clean installation of the operating system. However, if you want to keep the existing partitions 1 and 2, just delete the 3rd partition after creating a backup , format it, and install the operating system on that same partition.

Let us know if you need further information. In reply to Vanessa Yar’s post on October 7,

When rebooting system, it gets stuck on “please wait” screen. Sometimes the same behaviour happens when turning on the systems. It takes more than 15 minutes staying stuck on this screen. I realized that when I removed the network cable, the system logged in and “please wait” screen disappeared. It is happening for both windows 8 and windows Attachments: Up to 10 attachments including images can be used with a maximum of 3.
